san franciscans were visibly depressed the day after the presidential election. we were all gathered at qoöl and i heard frustration from one person after another. brian cox, like a lot of people, wore black. rosie the bartender was sporting her "fuck bush" shirt, and i kept thinking that a lot of people who saw her shirt on that night would not get the joke. which leads me to my little blog point: life goes on, people.
there is an irony at work here. the more we, the ones who are painfully aware of the devastating effect that bush is having on this country and this planet, spend out time complaining to each other, the less we accomplish. now gathering to gather to discuss ways of building bridges between ourselves and the people in ohio who voted for w (despite the suck-ass economy he delivered them on a silver platter), that would be something.
i don't mean to say that we're all a bunch of disgruntled isolated liberal idiots. i just mean to bring up the point that there must be a reason that san francisco and most of california is so fantastically progressive and the vast majority of the country is not (just check out the color coded maps they gave us on election night). if we here in sf are somehow on to some truth, that truth must be a common ground that everyone, even texans, can stand on. leading others to that ground therefore becomes the task.
in a way, we have earned the right to indulge in some complaining, especially in light of what happened on nov. 2 (and qoöl is a great place to do it - we have traditionally gathered together there after many a crisis). lets just keep things moving towards getting the message across to those who need that message most.
